Our Mission: To promote environmental
literacy through education.
Environmental Literacy: Possessing
the basic ecological awareness, understanding and skill to
have the ability to make informed decisions and to choose
actions that lead to the least amount of detrimental effects
on the environment.
Or as defined by the Environmental Education
Task force,
An environmentally literate person
has:
- An awareness and concern and concern
about the total environment.
- Possess the knowledge necessary to understand
both the environmental as a system and the role humans play
as a component of the system.
- Perceives how the development of human
technology has the ability to degrade and/or protect the
environment.
- Applies their awareness and knowledge
in assessing the environmental consequences of their actions,
individually and collectively, before and after actions
are taken, and resolves problems caused their own actions
or the actions of others.
MAEOE Goals and Objectives:
- To provide environmental and outdoor
education experience for educators
- Annual statewide conference
- Regional workshops
- Project wild workshops
- Presentation displays at related conferences
- To serve as an enabling organization
to coordinate outdoor and environmental education efforts
and resources in the state of Michigan.
- Create, modify, critique, support,
and/or select materials that promote environmental literacy.
- Support K-12 outdoor and environmental
education programming.
- Seek/assist/support funding for outdoor
and environmental education.
- Assist in monitoring/evaluating of
environmental and outdoor education efforts in Michigan.
- Publication of a quarterly newsletter.
- To provide opportunities for personal
interaction among educators.
- Workshops/conferences
